RankMath vs. Yoast: What We Use and Why

Yoast SEO and Rank Math do not rank pages. Google does. The plugin is a control panel for titles, index flags, sitemaps, redirects, and structured data. If those fields are empty, the traffic-light score is theater.

This is a buyer note for a new custom WordPress site, not an install walkthrough. The launch checklist that the plugin has to serve is in technical SEO for new WordPress sites.

Who actually uses which plugin

On WordPress.org, as of September 2026, Yoast SEO lists 10+ million active installations. Rank Math lists 4+ million. Yoast is the default a lot of owners already know. Rank Math is the tool that put redirects, 404 monitoring, and a wider schema catalog in the free product. Popularity is not quality. It is context. You will see Yoast on more aging installs. You will see Rank Math on more sites that wanted those controls without a second paid plugin.

The jobs we need at launch

• A unique title and description per public URL
• Index versus noindex that matches the page
• An XML sitemap of canonical URLs, not leftover staging paths
• 301s when a slug changes
• JSON-LD that matches visible copy (Googleu2019s documented preference in most cases)

Both plugins can do the first three. The split is where the free product stops. On a builder site, there is a sixth job the score panel has to pass first. It has to see the page you actually built.

Builder trees, the reason we actually pick Rank Math

On a GridCraft install the page is not sitting in the default WordPress editor. Oxygen stores the tree in builder data. Breakdance is the same family. That is the first place Rank Math beats Yoast on the work we ship.

Yoastu2019s own help article on visual page builders is blunt. They analyze Gutenberg, the classic editor, and Elementor. Copy outside that main content box is out of scope. They tried parsing other pluginsu2019 shortcodes. It broke sites. They stopped. Oxygen users writing into Yoastu2019s support threads report the same thing. Word count and keyphrase density ignore Oxygen copy because Oxygen never wrote it into the default content field.

Rank Mathu2019s Oxygen knowledge base, from Oxygen 3.8, says Rank Math parses text inside the Oxygen editor and runs on-page tests against that copy. Rank Math also documented analyzing Divi visual-builder headings and body text. Elementor has a sidebar in both plugins. Elementor is not the differentiator. Oxygen, Breakdance, and Divi are.

Current Oxygen feeds the builder tree into Rank Mathu2019s content-analysis API. Soflyy also ships a Yoast hook. Yoastu2019s published docs still do not list Oxygen or Breakdance as analyzed builders. In the editor we still see Yoast scoring an empty Gutenberg field while Rank Math sees the headings and body in the tree. That is why Rank Math is the default on these installs.

One limit. Rank Math is reading the page tree, not every header, footer, or archive template wrapped around a post. Dynamic fields that only exist after the frontend renders can still under-count in the score panel. Google still crawls the rendered HTML. The plugin score is an editor tool. A green light is not a crawl.

Where they differ in 2026

Builder content analysis. Covered above. This is the GridCraft-specific win. Rank Math reads Oxygen and Divi trees. Yoast reads the default editor plus Elementor.

Redirects. Rank Mathu2019s free product includes a redirect manager (301, 302, 307 in the common set) and a 404 monitor. Yoast keeps the redirect manager in Premium. On a rebuild, slug changes are not optional. Paying a second product only for 301s is a bad default for a small-business launch.

Schema types. Rank Mathu2019s free catalog is the wide one (on the order of 18 predefined types in current comparisons). Yoastu2019s free schema is a tighter graph: the basics, with more types and WooCommerce or local add-ons on paid plans. We do not turn every type on. We set Organization on the home page and Article on posts. Extra types that do not match the page violate Googleu2019s structured-data rules.

WooCommerce and local. Rank Mathu2019s free product includes Product schema and LocalBusiness for a single location. Yoast splits those into paid add-ons. Most GridCraft sites are not stores. When a rebuild is a shop or a map-pack page, we do not want a second Yoast product just to emit schema Google already documents.

Search Console in the dashboard. Rank Math connects Search Console and shows clicks, impressions, and average position next to the post. Yoastu2019s free product does not. This is ops, not a ranking lever. It means we fix a slipping URL in the same admin we edit.

Instant Indexing. Rank Mathu2019s free Instant Indexing module speaks IndexNow. Bing and other IndexNow engines can pick a URL up faster after publish. Yoast keeps IndexNow on Premium. Google does not treat IndexNow as a ranking system. We still submit the XML sitemap.

Focus keyphrases. Yoast free is one primary keyphrase. Rank Math free allows several. That is an editor convenience. It is not a ranking bonus. Stuffing five phrases into one post still writes a confused page.

Readability coaching. Yoastu2019s free readability analysis is still the stronger writing coach. If you want a green u201csentences too longu201d panel, Yoast is nicer. We write the copy. We do not need the plugin to grade our sentences.

Migration. Rank Mathu2019s setup wizard can import titles, descriptions, and related SEO data from Yoast. If a site already runs Yoast and it is healthy, we do not rip it out for sport. New GridCraft installs start on Rank Math because the launch controls we actually use sit in the free product, and because the builder tree is visible to the score panel.

What we will not claim

We have not run u201chundreds of bake-offs.u201d GridCraft ships a small number of custom installs. The default is an ops choice, not a lab ranking study. We also will not sell FAQ schema as a SERP cheat. Google restricted FAQ rich results in August 2023 and recorded a full deprecation for 7 May 2026 in Search Centralu2019s documentation changelog. FAQ copy on a page can still help a human. Accordion markup will not restore a rich result Google removed.

llms.txt is the same class of claim. Some SEO plugins now generate the file. Google has not made it a ranking system. We ship one as a short, intentional summary for tools that look for it. Titles, sitemaps, and index flags still do the work. Details are on the technical SEO checklist.

If you already have Yoast

Keep it until the rebuild. Do not run Yoast and Rank Math together. Duplicate titles, duplicate sitemaps, and fighting robots tags are how you donate a month to Search Console. On a GridCraft build we pick Rank Math, import what is worth keeping, and fill the fields we listed above before launch.
